With most major automakers such as BWW, Mercedes and Nissan actively setting their foot into the electric vehicle market, why should Chevrolet be left behind? This is why it has planned to unveil the second generation of its hybrid sedan – the 2018 Chevrolet Volt. With a complete redesign and new powertrain, Chevrolet is looking to make a mark in this hybrid segment.
More power from a hybrid?
Chevrolet Volt 2018 will likely use an all-electric powertrain with a gasoline range extender. In other words, the gasoline unit will power up itself once its batteries are drained. A 21 lb Lithium particle battery will be connected to three electric motors and will produce up to 18 KW of electricity. The gasoline unit, on the other hand, will be a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Producing 101 hp of and 105 lb-ft of torque.
Chevrolet claims that its new Volt will be capable of covering 55 miles on a single charge. And 420 miles when combined with the gasoline powertrain. The Toyota Prius Prime, its main competitor offers only 25 miles on a single charge. General Motors claims that 2018 Chevrolet Volt will travel up to 1000 miles every day on routine charging.
Noteworthy to mention are charging times which take 4.5 hours on a 240 V supply and 13 hours on 120 V. Chevrolet Volt clocks a top speed of 102 mph and 0-60 mph comes in 7.5 seconds.
2018 Chevrolet Volt- Design Changes
The second generation 2018 Chevrolet Volt is expected to be more buffed up and even lighter. The overall body weight of the sedan has been reduced by over 200 lbs owing to its unibody design and reduced roof structure.
A couple of sharp-edged head lights come with chrome finished grille and upper air intakes. Its body colored front bumper houses a couple of vertically aligned LED fog lamps. Which sit on top of the front fenders.
The rear of the car has been treated to the same edgy effects with sleek looking tail lights. And a large rear bumper giving the car an aggressive pose. Chevy has gifted its Volt with standard 17 inches 5 spoke painted aluminum wheels mated to 215/50R17 Blackwall.
2018 Chevrolet Volt has covered every aspect of the term infotainment. A 6 speaker surround sound system is fitted to an 8-inch color touchscreen. FM stereo, Bluetooth streaming, voice-activated technology for phone calls and Apple Car Play come as well. Sirius XM Satellite Radio is also available and comes coupled with other technologies such as 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot.
It overshadows Toyota Prius Prime’s 4 passengers seating with 5 passenger spacious seating capacity. By spacious Chevy means more leg and headroom. The steering wheel and seats are treated to premium leather which are6 way adjustable. Other notable features of Chevrolet Volt 2018 include rear window electric defogger, ambient lighting and cargo bed lamp.
This sedan comes with StabiliTrak which is Chevrolet’s version of ESC and includes ABS as well. All round airbags come as standard along with forwarding collision alert.
Other safety features include rear vision camera, Pedestrian safety signal, Lockout switch and Latch system for child safety seats. Safety on highways has been ensured with a low tire pressure monitoring system, lane keep assist, and cross traffic alert.
